Description and objectives

 

The project focuses on the construction of a new aqueduct infrastructure that supports and integrates the existing aqueduct, about 27,450 metres long, which ensures the water supply of the city of Rome and the Rieti territory, the Lower Sabina and the northern coast of Lazio, from Fiumicino to Civitavecchia.

 

The new structure aims to optimise the water management system, including a series of hydraulic tunnels and steel pipes. This new work will connect with the Salisano Hydroelectric Power Plant and the aqueducts to Rome.

 

The Peschiera-Capore System, built in the 1930s, has operated continuously for over 80 years and needs updating to ensure continuity of service in the water supply.

 

 

Project Objectives:

 

  • Reduce the risk of outages in the current system, which could have serious impacts on the water supply.

  • Guarantee the capacity to transport the full concession capacity of 10 m³/s to Rome, improving the safety and reliability of the system.

 

The total length of the new works is about 31 km, including branching works, new aqueduct, connection to the loading tank and surpass tunnel.

 

Planned Interventions

 

Branching works – springs – San Vittorino Plain

 

Construction of two parallel pipes (inner diameter of 2.50 m) using the microtunneling technique, up to the New Starting Artifact of the Aqueduct.

    Salisano intersection

     

    • Connection to the existing Load Tank to feed the hydroelectric power plant with the entire flow rate of 10 m³/s.

       

    • Construction of a system of tunnels and hydraulic load dissipation wells.

    New Upper Trunk of the Peschiera Aqueduct

     

     

    1. Excavation of a hydraulic tunnel with a TBM-EPB (internal diameter of 4.00 m) from Cotilia (Cittaducale) to San Giovanni Reatino.

     

     

     

     

     

    2. Crossing the valleys of Salto and Turano with siphons consisting of double pipes (inner diameter of 2.50 m), made with microtunneling

     

     

     

    3. From San Giovanni Reatino to Salisano, construction of a tunnel (inner diameter of 7.50 m) with a steel pipe (diameter of 3.40 m) using a ROCK TBM.
